It’s time for Wintering

The days are shorter. The weather colder. Winter is creeping upon us.

These past few weeks, I’ve found myself feeling more tired and drawn to staying indoors. Previously I would have tried to fight this, but this year I am consciously acknowledging the importance of honouring these feelings and recognising that our bodies and minds often need extra rest during this season. I am embracing the urge to slow down and allow myself the space to recharge without guilt (or less guilt). Sometimes, the best thing we can do is listen to our own needs and take the time to nurture ourselves.

Wintering is more than just enduring the colder months; it's about embracing the natural rhythm of the seasons. Winter is a time to retreat from the hustle and bustle, to honour the need for rest, and to nurture our inner selves. By aligning with nature and the slower pace of winter, we can find clarity, peace, and a deeper connection to our own lives. So how do we do this?

First, it is important to create a warm and inviting space where you can relax and unwind. It could be a nook by the window, or a cosy corner with candles, or the armchair by the fire with soft blankets and comfy cushions. Your sanctuary should be a reflection of comfort and tranquillity. Surround yourself with things that bring you joy and make you feel at ease. I have my favourite armchair with a soft blanket, soft lighting and candles, a spritz of my favourite room mist, and most importantly, a nice hot cup of tea!

Then, use these quiet moments of winter to reflect on the past year and set intentions for the months and year ahead. Stillness can be a powerful time of growth and self-discovery. What have you learned? What are you grateful for? What do you hope to achieve in the coming year? Journaling, meditation, and creative activities such as painting or crochet can also provide a soothing outlet for expression and introspection.

Don’t forget to also nourish your body. This is the perfect time for hearty and warming foods such as soups and stews. I have treated myself to a soup maker in the sales, so now there is no excuse for me not to have a fresh homemade soup instead of shop bought convenience food. Incorporating gentle exercises will keep your body moving and also help calm the mind. I must admit, I can do better on this front!

But even in the cold, nature has much to offer. A walk through the crunchy grounds or breathing in the crisp fresh air is great for movement and grounding. By honouring the cycles of nature and reminding ourselves that every season has a purpose, we can find balance and harmony in our own lives.

Rest this winter knowing that new growth and opportunities will be there with the vibrancy of spring.
